| Glenfiddich
Distillery Information Glenfiddich has been the biggest selling single malt whisky for more than 30 years and eases around 750,000 cases of whisky out of its on-site bottling plant each year. Glenfiddich is a giant of a drink and all of us that enjoy single malt whisky should pay homage. Glenfiddich's dallince with malt whisky began in 1963 when William Grant & Sons made the bold step of marketing their single malt whisky. Now it is enjoyed in more than 200 countries around the globe and their initial bravery has paved the way for others to join suit. It is hard to imagine that this great company was started by one man who, after serving his apprenticeship at Mortlach Distillery saved enough money to build Glenfiddich (meaning 'Valley of the deer'). From such humble beginnings William Grant & Sons now own five distilleries (Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Convalmore, Girvan and Kininivie which is the most recently built in 1992) operating four of them; one of them being the largest grain distillery in Europe based at Girvan. Glenfiddich operate their stills in trios: one wash still and two differently shaped stills for its spirit stills; a reflux ball still and a gas mantle still. This tradition dates back to 1887 when Cardhu were refitting their distillery and sold off all of their old equipment to William Grant - the purchase included the odd number of stills. |
